Notestark is free, stores nothing about you, and its source is open. These terms are short because there is very little between you and the software.
They apply to the Notestark extension for Chrome and to the pages on
notestark.com. Installing the extension or using this site means you accept
them. If you do not, do not install it — and uninstalling removes everything it stored.
The extension is released under the GNU General Public License v3.0. That licence, not this page, governs your rights to use, study, modify and redistribute the code. Where the two ever disagree, the GPL-3.0 wins. The full text ships with the source at github.com/cansuk/doc-highlighter.
The Notestark name, logo and the text and images on this website are not covered by that licence and remain the property of their author.
The passages you highlight and anything you write stay on your device. No ownership, licence or right over them is claimed, because they are never received in the first place — see the privacy policy.
That cuts both ways: you are responsible for your own backups. There is no server-side copy to restore from, and none can be provided.
Notestark is provided “as is”, without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to the warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. This mirrors sections 15 and 16 of the GPL-3.0.
In plain terms: it is careful software, but it can have bugs, and highlights can be lost — by a bug, by a browser update, by a change to a document, or by uninstalling. Do not rely on it as the only record of something you cannot afford to lose.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, the author is not liable for any damages arising from the use of, or inability to use, Notestark — including lost data, lost highlights, lost profits or business interruption, even where the possibility was known.
Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
The extension is distributed through the Chrome Web Store and runs inside Google Chrome. Google’s own terms apply to those, and are outside the control of this project. Optional translation uses the translator built into Chrome; the language model it downloads comes from Google, not from Notestark.
This is a personal project. There is no service-level commitment: the site can go down, and development can pause. Features can change or be withdrawn between versions — the changelog records what changed and when.
These terms can change. The date at the top changes with them, and the previous wording stays in this repository’s history. Continuing to use Notestark after a change means accepting the new terms.
These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of Türkiye, without regard to conflict of law rules. Consumer rights you hold under the law of your own country of residence are not affected.
